Children's dentistry in Laguna Niguel targets oral bacteria in cavity prevention

While many of the dental treatments provided by your family dentist are standard, the way in which care is performed will differ between a child and an adult patient. While children are developing both mentally and physically is the best time for them to learn that dentistry and oral care does not have to be unpleasant. At Basti Dental Center, we are serious about our children's dentistry services and we do our best to make families from Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, and other nearby areas feel comfortable and confident about their oral health.

One of the primary differences in the treatment of children is making dentistry fun. The more fun we have with our young patients, the more open they are to learning about what causes cavities and understanding how to protect their teeth both with professional care and with oral hygiene. Because cavities remain one of the top childhood diseases, we place a great deal of importance on education for the prevention of this dental problem.

Tackling the cavity problem

Most of us were taught at least indirectly that sugar causes cavities. The subsequent assumption for most people is that, to avoid cavities, one must avoid eating too many sweets. While a good rule of thumb, there is more to the prevention of cavities than this. At the bottom of the cavity problem is not only sugar, but oral bacteria.

Bacteria are natural to the oral environment and to the body as a whole. The microscopic organisms that live in the mouth become a problem when the pH balance of the mouth becomes too acidic. In the acidic environment, unhealthy pathogens thrive, paving the way for cavities, gum disease, and other conditions.

Fortunately, there is no outlandish secret to the prevention of cavities. Dr. Alex and Dr. Nina Basti place a great deal of focus on education for families of young children. The more our patients understand about oral bacteria and the link between sugar, acidity, and cavities, the more empowered they are to manage the oral health of family members of all ages.

At Basti Dental Care, each member of your family receives personal attention. Call 949-427-2096 to schedule your checkup.
