Tackling the cavity problem
Most of us were taught at least indirectly that sugar causes cavities. The subsequent assumption for most people is that, to avoid cavities, one must avoid eating too many sweets. While a good rule of thumb, there is more to the prevention of cavities than this. At the bottom of the cavity problem is not only sugar, but oral bacteria.
Bacteria are natural to the oral environment and to the body as a whole. The microscopic organisms that live in the mouth become a problem when the pH balance of the mouth becomes too acidic. In the acidic environment, unhealthy pathogens thrive, paving the way for cavities, gum disease, and other conditions.
Fortunately, there is no outlandish secret to the prevention of cavities. Dr. Alex and Dr. Nina Basti place a great deal of focus on education for families of young children.
